Title: out of dark, to the day's rising
Warnings/Notes: Spotify & Youtube playlists available. I made this for waywardmixes' 17th round, minor characters. It's meant as accompaniment to Éomer's journey throughout bitter days of Théoden's madness—when he knows evil is stirring and walking his land, but there's only so much he can do, and everything is blood and death—to the rediscovery of what he thought lost forever; Estel. So, yep, it's gen, but I'm not gonna stop you from feeling the Éomer/Aragorn undertones if you want to~
|I am named Éomer, son of Éomund, and am called the Third Marshal of Riddermark.|
Éomer sets a very fucking high standard for all the people out there who'd like to call themselves loyal. He's the most devoted Rohirrim you'll get; all he ever does is fight to protect his people, to serve his king, he's so utterly good it's almost disgusting. He's been fighting orcs and Uruks when his beloved cousin/brother Théodred dies; even then, even though King Théoden is being manipulated by Saruman's servants, Éomer keeps fighting for what he feels is right. He also gets sent to prison for all his trouble but does this stop him from being a wonderful human being? Hell, no.
Éomer loves his family—his sister Éowyn, whom he's overprotective of; his cousin/brother Théodred, and his uncle/father/King Théoden—and later, that will come to include Aragorn, who brought hope back to the land of Rohan and all the kingdoms of Men.
i. Opeth, The Lines in My Hand
Burning voice of insanity, nothing is the same. Barren lands for the idle man, find all the lines in your hand.
ii. First Aid Kit, In the Hearts of Men
I still try to speak up but my voice won't make a sound, and I thought it all over too many times, But when there is no use and the lights are all out, I just give it up and I walk home.
iii. Portugal. The Man, Salt
My legs are all buried in salt, the way as my lips move out all of my words, the way. But this can't be all that we have to wait... Do you hear the wind, child? Calling out the salt plains. Listen to the wind, child, it's calling, calling out your name. I was born of sun beams, warming up our limbs, born up from the earth, child.
iv. Bowerbids, Human Hands
And the deer shake in their hooves and shield their fawn, and when the rain comes, the rain comes. No judgement falls. Yet, there is hate all around. There's a rusty prick in the tall grassw here the barbed wire waits for a blind horse in a gallop, and its sealed and sudden fate. There is hate in the grip of our human hands.
v. Radical Face, All Is Well (It's Only Blood)
All is well now, pay no mind. All is well now, I'm just fine, I'm just fine. It's only blood; I have plenty left. It's only blood; I just need to rest. I said I'd fix this, that I'd set things straight. You begged me not to, but I couldn't stay, couldn't wait. They cut me up, but I did them worse. And I'll be fine, I just need to rest. All is well now.
vi. Richard Ashcroft, Lord I've Been Trying
Captain tell me where I've been, are there waves left there for me? Is there something left to see? Is there something left to be? Oh, I know that I'm holding on but I've got time to grow. Alright, alright, alright, said it's alright, now.
vii. Of Monsters and Men, King & Lionheart
Howling ghosts – they reappear in mountains that are stacked with fear, but you're a king and I'm a lionheart. A lionheart. His crown lit up the way as we moved slowly, past the wondering eyes of the ones that were left behind. Though far away, though far away, though far away we're still the same, we're still the same, we're still the same. Howling ghosts – they reappear in mountains that are stacked with fear, but you're a king and I'm a lionheart. And in the sea that's painted black, creatures lurk below the deck, but you're a king and I'm a lionheart. And as the world comes to an end I'll be here to hold your hand, 'cause you're my king and I'm your lionheart.
viii. Sara Bareilles, Chasing The Sun
You said, remember that life is mot meant to be wasted, we can always be chasing the sun! So fill up your lungs and just run, but always be chasing the sun! All we can do is try, and live like we're still alive. It's a really old city, stuck between the dead and the living, so I thought to myself, sitting on a graveyard shelf, and the gift of my heartbeat sounds like a symphony.
ix. Deep Purple, Love Conquers All
And if it takes me a lifetime, I swear I'll tear down every wall. Love conquers all. On my way, tomorrow I rise with the sun. Soon I'll be gone, words can't say how the memories of feelings of love they linger on. And if it takes me forever, I know it's worth every teardrop that falls.
x. Joe Purdy, I Love the Rain the Most
Well, the dark waves, they start singing together. I can't believe this change in the weather, I start to hum a child's rhyme and all these boats, they start rocking in time. And I love the rain the most when it stops.
|Out of doubt, out of dark to the day's rising
I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.
To hope's end I rode and to heart's breaking:
Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!
—The Return of the King, LoTR Book 5, Ch 6, The Battle of the Pelennor Fields
Some more rambling because it makes me happy:
The first half of the mix (i-vi) is meant to go with the shocking, depressing period when Théoden seems lost and Éomer is out of his home, away from Éowyn, fighting, Théodred a few steps ahead of him and, later, dead. King and Lionheart is such a Éomer song it makes me wanna scream; he's so loyal he could shame a dog, and you can read his King as Théoden or Aragorn already, whatever makes you happier. The second half of the mix is for the slightly uplifting turn of RoTK—they're still at war and it's still shit but at least there's hope. And I love the rain the most when it stops should make you think of the gorgeous scene in the movies where Éomer finds Théodred on the Isen and it's raining and Karl Urban looks like that and good Eru I need a moment.
Hope you enjoy the mix.
